4.0 out of 5 stars Nice illustrations, good text March 19, 2002
By A. Joyce
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is well-written with explanations of many of the "major big machines" typically seen in and around construction sites. The illustrations are excellent, with attention to detail.
My one complaint is the book's construction. The pages are thinner than most paper pages and tend to tear easily. Also, the covers seem prone to ripping and tearing as well.

The Construction Alphabet Book [Paperback]

The Construction Alphabet Book
Jerry Pallotta (Author), Rob Bolster (Illustrator)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Pallotta follows the alphabetical formula used in many of his other titles, this time with Bolster's illustrations to showcase different types of construction equipment. Upper- and lowercase letters are paired with brief descriptive paragraphs that explain how pieces of construction equipment–from an aerial lift to a zipper–are used. Some of the machines are used in demolition, some for roads; others to clear land or erect buildings. Treatment is brief. A backhoe, cement mixer, dump truck, jackhammer, and wrecking ball will be more familiar to children than a horizontal borer, knuckleboom loader, mobile rock crusher, quad-axle lowbed, and vactor. The realistic paintings, rich in tones of blue, brown, red, green, and orange, will attract youngsters. Libraries with a high demand for construction-related books should consider adding this appealing title.–Lynn K. Vanca, Akron-Summit County Public Library, Richfield, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars literature and art lover April 10, 2007
By D. Sena
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
After seeing the front cover illustration of The Construction Alphabet Book on Amazon, I knew that I'd not be disappointed with the interior images, and had to purchase this book. My three year old son is obsessed with digger machines, as well as all things construction and farm, and when book after book arrived from Amazon, for myself and my older child, he asked for his turn to receive a new "digger" book. Rob Bolster's dump truck and excavator illustration caught my eye, and as we now have a huge library of construction books, I've become more choosey in the selection of new books. Exposing my children to literature and the arts is important to me; the illustrations that were created for this book are exceptional, accurate, and they capture the wonderful light and color of Edward Hooper. With so many poorly illustrated children's books, even our little guy can point out the mistakes in some illustrations, equipment and even in the text of many books, this is a refreshing addition to our collection. Even for the less sophisticated art lover, the beautifully composed pictures of construction vehicles, that are so full of wonderful color and light, will capture your child's attention as much as the subject and text. This will be a book that I will actually keep and enjoy long after the toddler obsession has moved onto something else. In the future, we will be looking for other books illustrated by Mr. Bolster and hope to meet him at a book signing!

Managing Performance in Construction [Hardcover]

Managing Performance in Construction

Book Description

July 6, 2010  0470171642  978-0470171646 1
Construction is the country's single largest manufacturing industry. However, it is a sector that lacks benchmarks against which to gauge performance. This modern thinking intends to provide insight to construction productivity improvement. Taking cues from manufacturing sectors such as computer, automobile and chemical companies, this book will apply the lessons learned to building construction. Supported with a range of pedagogical devices, the book will be of equal value to construction managers and civil engineers, and students with different learning methods.

Critical Path Methods in Construction Practice [Hardcover]

Critical Path Methods in Construction Practice
James M. Antill (Author), Ronald W. Woodhead (Author)

Book Description

February 1990  0471620572  978-0471620570 4th
An updated and revised edition of the standard work on the use of critical path methods (CPM) in the construction industry. Describes the mechanics and procedures of CPM in construction planning and works control and demonstrates its application to large and small projects alike. Emphasis is not on the mathematics--the stress here is on the solution of problems commonly encountered in construction practice.

Antill and Woodhead clearly expose the step-by-step development of PERT/CPM in a way that the technique can be easily understood. Classic examples such as the construction of Sidney Opera House highlight the applicability. The chapter devoted to acceleration is a must.

As any book from the 60s, computational tools are not addressed, but it is not a problem. The point is that this highly recommendable book is to be read to those who want to master the fundamentals of CPM.

The End of Project Overruns: Lean and Beyond for Engineering, Procurement and Construction [Paperback]

The End of Project Overruns: Lean and Beyond for Engineering, Procurement and Construction

Book Description

April 10, 2010  1599428962  978-1599428963
Applying the principles in this book unleashes ingenuity that achieves, solidifies and perpetuates a new performance culture of mutual benefit. In this culture, project teams will prepare their work in task packages and enable workflow necessary to leave inefficiency of time and resource, literally, no place to hide. Project examples will help teams implement the principles that shorten cycle times, eliminate error, improve quality and reduce costs to succeed in meeting project commitments. Emerging Lean enterprise relationships between clients, EPC contractors and their entire supply chain will advance what constitutes the new, market-differentiating performance of individuals, project teams and companies - justifying high levels of trust and inter-organizational efforts to improve. Client executives will learn to recognize root causes of risk and sources of excellence to mitigate them. Well-developed strategic improvement is often constrained because the traditional way - current means and methods - fit squarely in everyone's comfort zone. By learning to ask the right questions, top-client leadership will soon render overruns from the best traditional systems as "not-good enough" and strive for a new level of excellence. EPC executives will better engage creative voices from their best resources and stakeholders to resolve all concerns and define a unified vision for how to deliver on clients' expectations without overruns during capital project delivery. Lean methods will effectively assure that vision, principles and best expectations are understood and implemented at the workface. Department, discipline and stakeholder leaders will align and no longer frustrate each other and their clients. They will plan and execute with increased efficiency and effectiveness. Cost reduction will accelerate, retaining only client-valued quality - enabling a nimble response to market opportunities and threats. Project and program managers will confidently accept intense, market-induced cost and schedule-reduction efforts. They will apply new metrics, measure potential and extract, align and pilot improvements. They will make workface progress transparent to simplify resource balancing, full utilization and workface flow during all project phases. The results will differentiate team members and their project's performance on the world stage. Project professionals and the skilled labor force will gain confidence to make and keep increasingly difficult commitments and experience thereby increasing opportunity in an organization known for excellence. They will fully engage heart and mind for leaders who expect excellence and they trust to enable and reward best practice performance while they jointly eliminate root causes of problems before they happen. This book guides readers through each essential role for the transformation to Lean...not just at the lowest levels but of the entire business model and all the supporting processes. Resulting market recognition of sustained excellence of people, their systems and they way they work together will create a market-leading force.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thick with insight and strategies July 9, 2010
Format:Paperback
This is not another book that only provides theory and rhetoric. This book walks you through the ins and outs of implementing lean principles at all levels of what we in the defense industry call non-recurring engineering (NRE), or engineering efforts that only occur once. Our projects typically cost a few thousand man hours. This book has examples from real-world projects with 3+ million man hours of NRE! This book takes you through all the ins and outs of how to apply the lean, six sigma, theory of constraints, and related genres to real world, enormous engineering efforts. The authors show how the principles that have made such drastic improvements in the manufacturing industries can easily, effectively, and properly be applied to engineering. This book is truly a first and best of its kind!

When starting a new software engineering department at my company I used this book as a guide and was able to make immediate improvements in our processes. This resulted in successfully deploying a brand new software test platform in less than two weeks of what is normally a 12 week cycle! My best guess is that we only implemented about 10% of what the authors suggested! Perhaps this was low-hanging fruit... but that's the point. This book showed us how to capture that fruit in a matter of a few hours, and save 83% of our schedule! But the book doesn't sell short-term solutions. It's all about institutionalizing these principles for long-term, sustainable success. And that's where it really excels, providing deep insights into human behavior, and providing metrics, principles, practices, and insights for making continuous process improvements on an ongoing basis. It doesn't read like a novel, but it's well worth your money and time. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE!!!

From discrete to continuous modelling, with many proyects and examples, I like very spacially this book for the undergraduate level. The presentation is very clear, but rigurous, making experience the reader through the models. It focuses on the interpretation and ends with some tools for modelbuilding. For a start of mathematical model understanding of reality this book is specially good, clear and completely well written. Good job Mr. Giordano and Weir! 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for your little construction enthusiast June 1, 2006
Format:Hardcover
My son loves this book-- it takes you all around a big building site with Kristin the iron worker apprentice. It has a nice rhythm, and lots of great but simple vocabulary-- like choker cables and spud wrenches.

This book is also written on two levels-- you can read the narrative, which is brief and sweet, or you can stop on each page and read the notes. The notes describe what exactly the "plumber upper" and the "deckers" are doing, and which tools they use.

AND- it was written by a woman no less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Building a house 101 for preschoolers November 6, 2001
By Diane
Format:Paperback
Byron Barton gets another A+ in my book for clear, simple pictures and text. This book is geared for the toddler/preschooler crowd with its primary colors and constuction basics. It would be a great book for anyone in the process of building a house or watching houses being built in their neighborhood.
My 2 year old sons are really starting to associate the similarities between this book and some of the construction sites we visit. While Barton's pictures are simple, there is enough detail to expand beyond the written text. For example, on the page with words "They put up walls.", we are able to find the windows, the floor and foundation. On the page with the plumber, they like to point out the future shower, toilet, and sink. (And of course, being 2, they like to expand on the functions of the staples of every bathroom!)
Our only complaint is that the finished house needs a little decorator's touch. After all, it is totally green and red with no landscaping whatsoever! Even my guys noticed there are no trees. But overall a great book for all our future builders.

My 3 year old son loves this book. I learned of this author / illustrator team reading "Close your eyes," another good bedtime book. I came across this one on Amazon and noted that it is one of relatively few books that focus on children and their fathers. Mom's feature prominently in most childrens' books. As a divorced fatherwho doesn't get to spend nearly enough time with his little boy, I wanted to find some that focus on kids spending time with Dad. The illustrations are simple but evocative, and the words seem to transport a child into the world of a busy city at night.

Young children will adore it as will the adults who get to read aloud these irresistable rhymes!

It is one of his daily favorites that we have to read multiple times. I love the informational components (he now knows what tracks, pistons, jacks, etc. are and what they do). I also love the rhyming component. It is a wonderful story especially if your child loves machines.

I purchased several Haba architectural building block sets for my six year old as she loves to build and learn. The blocks are durable, soft with no rough edges (no worries for splinters) and designed very well. The only component that is missing is instructions. You do not receive pictures from all angles so therefore it is difficult to ensure that you building correctly. If there was at least a chart that denotes how many of each item that you should have in your box, it would make it a little easier. Nevertheless, a fun, challenging experience!
